Even as the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh faces the heat of the coal scam, it has been found that the person who drew PM's name into the scam, former coal secretary P C Parakh had warned of mafia in the coal industry way back in 2005.

In a letter to Singh in 2005, Parakh, who is also named in CBI FIR, had said that mafia had entered the ministry. The letter was a response to then coal minister Shibu Soren's demand for Parakh's transfer.
Parakh has claimed that Soren was against his idea of calling for bids in coal allocation.

Parakh has been questioning his naming in the CBI FIR with regard to allocation of Talabira II coal blocks to Hindalco, a subsidiary of Birla Group. His contention is that he as coal secretary had recommended the allocation, but PM Manmohan Singh had approved it. He feels even Singh is equally guilty. The CBI says that Hindalco was shown undue favours.

Meanwhile, Singh has said that he is ready to face probe. “I am not above the law of the land. If there is anything that the CBI, or for that matter anyone wants to ask, I have nothing to hide,” he said speaking on board Air India One while returning from Beijing on Thursday.
