New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday petitioned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for a relief package of Rs 6,510 crore for the Phailin Cyclone-hit areas.

Promptly, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced an interim assistance of Rs 1,000 crore for Andhra Pradesh for relief and rehabilitation.

The total quantum of assistance to the State will be finalized after consideration of the on-the-spot assessment report of the Inter-Ministerial Central Team.

In addition, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the seriously injured persons from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

A delegation led by AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh and Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy called on the Prime Minister and presented a memorandum regarding the losses suffered owing to the impact of Phailin Cyclone and the subsequent heavy rains and floods in the State.

Kiran Kumar Reddy thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi for the liberal assistance to Andhra Pradesh.

Earlier, both the Prime Minister and the Congress President, who were to visit Andhra Pradesh, had to put off their visit.

Both of them, however, came forward for liberal assistance to Andhra Pradesh, the Chief Minister pointed out at a press briefing later.

The Chief Minister requested the Centre to reimburse Rs 1,145 crore deducted from the financial assistance sanctioned by the High-Level Committee, while releasing National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) released during 2009-2010 t0 2012-2013.

On this, the Prime Minister assured Kiran Reddy that if the request was in order, he would order immediate release of the amount.

The Chief Minister also requested for the total waiver of crop loans to the affected farmers, as they are unable to get back to normalcy, due to repeated cyclone calamities like Laila, Jal, Thane, Nilam and Phailin Cyclones. The State has been reeling under successive bouts of drought and cyclones, he said.

In the 16 affected districts, he said the loss of human lives was 58 persons had died. Crop was lost on a staggering 14 lakh acres, he said. Besides, the damage extended to roads, ponds, canals and houses.
