Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal, regarded the accusations of a young journalist of raping her as an oblique and un-precedented political motive to malign his image. While seeking an anticipatory bail for himself Tejpal dubbed the alleged incident as 'light-hearted bantering" and said the journalist "continued to party" afterwards.The 50-year-old editor said he was "shocked to learn that a false complaint was sought to be projected as an incident of alleged harassment."
In a plea which will be heard by the Delhi High Court today Mr Tejpal says "The said encounter (on November 7) was only light-hearted bantering which led to a moment of privacy between two individuals,"
"The alleged colleague continued to party and was completely normal and friendly all throughout her stay in Goa," he said of the journalist who accused him of sexually assaulting her twice inside the lift of the hotel where the magazine had organized an event earlier this month.
He termed the complaint "clearly motivated, false and an afterthought with oblique motive."
"The lady continued to attend, participate in the conference / festival with elan," he says, questioning the journalist's 'reference' to the incident 10 days later.
Referring to the FIR, or police complaint against him in Goa Mr Tejpal said "The mannerism and the scale in which a particular political party has unleashed the wrath of its vengeance in garb of the present FIR is synonymous to the previous attempts of the BJP to malign and target (Mr Tejpal)."
This marks a complete u-turn from Mr Tejpal's apology to the young woman last week. He had emailed, "I apologize unconditionally for the shameful lapse of judgement that led me to attempt a sexual liaison with you on two occasions....despite your clear reluctance that you did not want such attention from me."
