Can we as a democratic country, afford to have any kind of external pressures on any Member of Parliament, be it pressures of party, religion, caste, or any other denomination?
To define what does the Member of Parliament represent?
First and foremost he represents the people of the constituency from where he has been selected, secondly he is elected as a representative of the state, to which his constituency belongs and finally, but not the least, the country he represents - INDIA.
Consequentially, his first responsibility is towards the people of his own constituency, towards the state he represents from and the well being and protection of the mother country INDIA.
Allegiance to party of the Member of Parliament does not come in the preview of the interest of the constituency, the state or the country.
The function of the party is to facilitate the grouping of like-minded people, to work as a unit for a common cause, but should it be extended inside of Parliament? Inside the Parliament, should not the independence of the Member be paramount? If the party is a grouping of like-minded persons should not the influence, the party extends on it members, be limited to outside of parliament and is it not the responsibility of the party to command (different from force) the confidence of any like-minded Member of Parliament inside of parliament? Will any pressures within the Parliament by the party, compromise the independence of the Member in Parliament? Which can compromise the very basis of the democratic functioning of the Parliament.
