The four-day event of International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad was inaugurating by Chief Minister Anandiben Patel.

The festival attracts enthusiastic kite makers and flyers from across the globe. Kites in various shapes and hues took over the Ahmedabad sky as foreign and local kite flyers competed with each other.

The festival that marks the end of winter will culminate on January 13.

"Today, on the occasion of the festival, I give all the children of Gujarat, women and all kite lovers my warm greetings. The diaspora who attended the diaspora conclave will also be a part of this event and enjoy it," said Patel.

As many as 150 international kite flyers are participating in the festival along with domestic participation from various parts of the country. Various musical and cultural programmes have also been arranged to showcase the local flavor to foreign tourists thronging the city for the festival.

"This is my second year in India and the reason I returned to India because I love India so much, call it enchanting India. This festival gives me the opportunities not only to compete with international kite flyers but local kite flyers," said a kite flyer from Malaysia, Zol Harris.

Kites with portraits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Barack Obama hit the local markets ahead of the festival. They were a hit with the customers in view with Obama's visit to India later in January to attend Republic Day celebrations.

The International Kite Festival in Gujarat has become a major tourist attraction for the state over the years. This state-run event witnesses the exemplary creativity of kite makers and the exceptional skills of kite flyers.
