New Delhi: A ‘national interest’ united the warring political parties in the country in a rare show of solidarity finding even the squabbling cousins, the TDP and the TRS on the same page here on Friday.

The occasion was a meeting of the Speakers of the Assemblies and chairpersons of the Legislative Councils called for by the Speaker of Lok Sabha Sumitra Mahajan.

On the issue of attending the proposed Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conference at Islamabad, Sumitra Mahajan put forth the proposal of boycotting the same as the Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir was not being invited for it.

Pakistan ignored Jammu and Kashmir for the upcoming conference of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) being hosted by it in Islamabad next month, citing ‘disputed nature’ of Kashmir as per UN resolutions.

Though representatives of Government of India and other Indian States are among the invitees to the international programme, no such invitation has been extended to Jammu and Kashmir government.

“Pakistan has refused to my participation in the conference saying the Speaker of J&K Legislative Assembly can’t be part of the conference as per UN resolutions,” Speaker Kavinder Gupta told the media earlier.

The CPA is committed towards developing, promoting and supporting parliamentarians and their staff to identify benchmarks of good governance and implement enduring values of Commonwealth.

The official said the move by Islamabad angered New Delhi and it has communicated to all States to withhold sending nominations for the conference. Both Kodela Siva Prasada Rao, Speaker of the AP Assembly and Madhusudhana Chary, Speaker of the Telangana Assembly, were unanimous in supporting the boycott call.
