The first draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), released at midnight on Sunday which included 1.9 crore names with surprising entries of rebel leader Paresh Baruah and the ones who failed to make it to the draft such as Lok Sabha MP and All India United Democratic Front chief Badruddin Ajmal.

The remaining 1.4 crore applicants verification process was still going on according to Registrar General of India Sailesh.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stated that not a single genuine Indian citizen would be excluded from the final NRC.

Ulfa (Independent) commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah made it to the list along with the names of five of his family members.

Many leaders from across the political spectrum don't make it in the first list. Apart from Ajmal, who represents Muslim-majority Dhubri, the names of his brother Sirajuddin, also a Lok Sabha MP, and two sons didn’t find a place in the draft as their documents are still being verified.

Even AIUDF MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Quasimi and his family along with BJP MLA from Hojai Shiladitya Dev have not been included in the draft NRC.

The BJP MLA had triggered a controversy in November when he said that most Muslims in the state are from Bangladesh.
