There have been raging protests against the Sterlite copper plant in Tamil Nadu for a while, which turned violent last week resulting in loss the of 13 lives.

The state government finally gave a order for the closure of the plant on Monday, after the deputy minister O.Panneerselvam, Fisheries minister D Jayakumar and Information & publicity minister Kadambur C Raju visited the injured protesters at the Tuticorin government hospital.

This can be considered a political move made to avoid being cornered by the opposition party calling for the resignation of the CM, due to loss of lives in the protest, in the Tamil Nadu assembly session which was to occur the following day.

While the plant was shut down many times, this was the first time it was sealed by the government, which was done by a of officials led by Tuticorin district collector Sandeep Nanduri on Monday evening.team
