It took less than a dozen men to strike terror into the heart of the whole of Europe by staging the Paris attacks. France has not yet recovered from the horror of these savage attacks.
It took less than a dozen men to strike terror into the heart of the whole of Europe by staging the Paris attacks. France has not yet recovered from the horror of these savage attacks.
The question raised repeatedly by analysts and terrorism experts underpins the problem terrorism brings--how do you protect every citizen, every house, every single nook and cranny of a large, many-layered cosmopolitan city like Paris? Their warped interpretation and understanding of a few Jihadists and IS foot soldiers led these terrorists to believe that they would succeed in bringing the West to its knees, as those who staged the 9/11 WTC attacks did.
However, Paris and France remained resilient and defiant. Europe, along with the rest of the world, stood by France in its hour of grief. The hashtag Paris attacks shook the conscience of the world and was a grim reminder of the advantage a terrorist has as much as it exposed the vulnerability of civilised societies. As always, humanity triumphed even if it was at the cost of precious, innocent lives.
The Paris attacks must not be seen in isolation. They symbolise a murderous assault on liberty and a free way of life. They seek to impose a twisted, warped, narrow-minded ideology on the West and the rest of the world.
Russia's military strikes on ISIS headquarters after the downing of its passenger aircraft and France's retaliatory strikes, have been swift and sharp.
India has been a victim of proxy war and terrorism for three decades now beginning with the Zia-ul-Haq era in Pakistan. A spate of terrorist incidents over this period have repeatedly exposed the chinks in our security armour. The time has come to shake ourselves from slumber and slough off the thick skin of complacency.
It is only now that the West seems to see the seamless connection between terrorist groups and the global face of terrorism. The underlying pattern in the hijack to Kandahar, 9/11, the attack on our Parliament, Madrid, London, 26/11 and Paris must be seen and recognised. Terrorism is a global challenge and must be countenanced as such.
