The concluding day of the 21st Federation Cup Sr. Athletics Championships was all about renewed rivalries and some major disappointments.As the sun rose, over the grounds at Patiala’s Netaji Shubhash National Institute of Sports, so did the hunger for medals.Women athletes ruled the roost on the final day here. By the end of it, fans would witness some nail biting encounters in various track and field events, spanning through the fourth and final day of this sporting extravaganza.

It was brilliance on Nayana’s front, as she outclassed her competitors for the second time to secure another Gold in the Championships. She completed the race in 13.96 seconds, and went onto substantiate her efforts in the track and field events.

In Women’s 400 m category gold medal was secured by Nirmala from Haryana as she set Meet record at 51.28 seconds. Poovamma Raju from Karnataka and Debashree Mazumdar from Bengalfinished close at second and third place. Nirmala now focuses on the Asian and World Championships, with much support of her loved ones.

These were the standings at the end of the contest. Nirmala won convincingly trouncing her opponents. Rewarding for her is a berth at the IAAF World championships.It was a major a disappointment for Jisna Matthew, who was the clear favourite going into the competition.

In Women’s 100m category, as the multitudes was rallying behind compatriots from Odisha, the crowd witnessed fiercely fought contest between Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda. As anticipated, Dutee finished first, ahead of Srabani, clocking 11.48 seconds. She was the favourite going into the contest, and she certainly did not disappoint.National Record holder Dutee, now aims to better her performance at the International level.

This is how things stood at the end of the contest. Merlin K. Joseph from Keralafinished closely at third place, and earned her rightful place at the podium with the top two athletes. Other participants will certainly take a lot of heart from their performance here.

As the championships games came to a close, the fans had witnessed some dedicated efforts by the athletes, which would inspire them. They competed fairly and did their best, displaying strong determination, great perseverance and true sportsmanship.
