In an industry where male comedians are given more importance, Bharti Singh is a rare find who had made a mark for herself as a comedian par excellence and has also proved her skills as a delightful host. Currently seen in the new show “Comedy Classes” with her talent and entertaining skills, she is sure to keep the audience rolling with laughter.

Salman Khan and Bharti Singh

Originally from Amrtisar this chubby girl has sure come a long way. The otherwise ever chattering and fun-loving Bharati sounds sudued as she remembers her childhood. “I lost my father early in life and my mother has been my strongest support in whatever I have done till now,” she reveals. She went on to become a post graduate in History while also winning medals at the National level for Archery and Pistol shooting.

However, it was her interest in mimicking that made her nurture the ambition of becoming a comedian, one day and she was encouraged by her immediate family. “I started with stage shows and competitions in Amritsar and nearby places and I won them too. However, my big achievement came when I came to Mumbai and won the Season 4 of ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ in 2008 on Star One.”

There has been no looking back ever since, as her character of Laali got famous during the show, and Bharti went on to do “Comedy Circus” for four years in a row, until she was roped in as a celebrity contestant for the dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhla Jaa”. Despite her weight, Bharti impressed all with her dancing skills, but withdrew herself from the show when she thought that the eliminations were unfair. “I had stopped doing “Comedy Circus” too at that time but then that opened the doors for me to being a host for shows and award functions as well as grow as an actor.”

Bharti who has done many Punjabi films and has also done a stint in the Hindi film “Khiladi 786” has so far stayed away from the typical fiction shows on Indian television. Ask her whether she will ever accept one of those, and she giggles, “You never know… I may end up being a simple bahu in one of the saas bahu sagas…” but adds on a serious note, “My strength lies in comedy and I am happy doing stand-up comedy as of now, which is what I want to focus for the next couple of years.” That also might be because she does not have to diet or reduce weight, since Bharti loves food, “I love food and hate gym! So there is no way I want to reduce weight. I am happy with my body and the way I am… professionally also, I feel reducing weight may hamper my success, because I am loved for how and what I am.”

In “Comedy Classes” Bharti will be seen with Krushna Abhishek and Sudesh, but it is Kapil Sharma who she feels is her inspiration, “I have learnt a lot from Kapil and am proud of his success.” While Bharti is ready to talk about everything, she is wary of talking about her personal life where it is being rumored that she is secretly engaged to “Comedy Circus” writer, Harsh. “That is just a rumor and whenever I get engaged it will be done openly,” laughs Bharti, who has always openly flirted with actors for her shows.
