Education has always been about being wise and observant. But somewhere along the lines of competition, this agenda of education has been camouflaged behind the canopy of people looking to crush you and get ahead. We tend to forget about things that are important.
While the world decided to look ahead and decided to modernize without developing, we crippled ourselves with over use of fixed resources and unchecked emissions leading to global warming and disease ridden lifestyle. This is where DTU Supermileage finds its place in the spectrum of things.
DTU Supermileage is a collegiate team whose sole focus is towards sustainable development. As the name suggests, their mission is to develop a “super mileage vehicle” that provides maximum mileage for a litre of gasoline while trying to reduce the impact of gasoline powered vehicles on the environment. This year the team has also decided to take on the challenge of developing a all electric vehicle considering the imminent fuel crisis and he team is well underway to build a car of the future. The team participates in the Shell Eco Marathon Asia, the single biggest competition in Asia for super mileage vehicles. The team has an exemplar record in the competition finishing 14th last year among the 140+ participating teams.
The Shell Eco Marathon is a prestigious competition that gathers the brightest minds under one roof, with a singular objective i.e. to tackle the imminent energy crisis. It is a great opportunity for students to tap into their potential and make their mark of the technosphere. The competition provides exposure and broadens horizons as different theories are tried and tested to improve efficiency. It is an international competition with an annual footfall of about 4000+ people, and is to be held in Singapore this year, from 7th of March to 11th March. The stage is set and the goal is clear. May this team from India bring laurels from all the judges and most importantly bring forth technology that is vital to saving the planet.
The team was started in the year 2005, to counter the imminent fuel crisis and was the first team in India to develop a super mileage vehicle. The team participated in SAE Super mileage initially, and has moved on to Shell Eco Marathon since 2013. The vehicle has been designed so as to minimise energy losses. The design is simple yet futuristic, and the shape is hence constructed to facilitate air flow around the car, unlike the existing cars.
The project garners interest from several investors who contribute to the development and study of the technology. “We are on the verge of some serious breakthroughs when it
comes to fuel efficiency. The cost of the vehicle we are developing isn’t that high either hence can easily fit into the various existing commercial sectors. We use latest equipment and technology to provide desirable results i.e. the enhanced mileage of the vehicle” says a blooming captain who is satisfied with the team’s progress over the years. “Our faculty advisor, Mr Atul Kumar Aggarwal has aided se with the technical expertise and help us progress overall as a team. Our University also provides us help by providing us with essential machinery to make all this possible.”
