New Delhi: Several Congress leaders met the Antony Committee in the Congress War Room in 15, Gurudwar Rakab Ganj Road in the capital, and gave their feedback on why the party could not fare better in Telangana.

Former Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy, TPCC President Ponnala Lakshmaiah, C Uttam Kumar Reddy, former PCC President V Hanumanth Rao, G Vivek, Youth Congress President Vamshi Chander Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar had one-on-one interactions with the Committee, giving their individual assessments. Ponnala Lakshmaiah declined to speak to media.

Former PCC President V Hanumanth Rao blamed the debacle on top leaders. He said he had personally addressed letters to Digvijay Singh, the AICC General Secretary incharge of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, on the need to organize meetings across Telangana to showcase Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s decision to create Telangana State. He wondered why the party did not act upon it. He was also critical of TPCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah and pointed out that election funds did not reach all the candidates. Negligence of the cadres cost the party dearly, he noted.

After the CWC resolution, the failure of the Congress to take action against the then Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who openly defied the resolution, as well as the failure to strike an alliance adversely affected the Congress poll prospects, he said. Youth Congress President Vamshi Chander Reddy was convinced that the people and the party workers were still with the Congress and if the youth was entrusted with greater party responsibility, the party could easily be revived.

G Vivek felt the government’s development programme was not popularized among the people. He wanted the youth to be given a chance in the Congress revamp.
Digvijay Singh refused to divulge any details of his assessment. However, he said that the anti-defection law would apply to MLCs, who had crossed over to the TRS.
