Over six decades later, the land collected as part of the Bhoodan movement is at the centre of a “scam.” It is alleged that only 50 per cent of the land donated has been distributed over the last 60 years and the rest has been illegally occupied.

In view of this, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has decided to constitute a cabinet committee to look into the issue of Bhoodan lands. The cabinet committee will hold its first meeting on July 7. The committee will also take up a survey of the Bhoodan lands to identify the occupants of the land and determine the extent to which they have been misused. The Deputy Chief Minister said these lands were sold to private individuals who were using it for commercial purpose. Therefore, the government would ascertain the facts, before initiating necessary action, he said.

The government proposes to take up a comprehensive survey involving all kinds of lands including assigned lands. The last such survey was done 84 years ago (1930).
Mahmood Ali reiterated the government’s commitment to distribute 3 acres of land to each Dalit family. He, however, said the reports that the government would start distributing some of the lands from August 15 were not correct.

Meanwhile, the government on Saturday appointed the Principal Secretary to Government, Revenue Department, as the authority to exercise the powers and discharge the duties of the Bhoodan Board in the State of Telangana, pending constitution of a regular Bhoodan Board.
