Nizamabad: Farmers are expressing concern over cultivation in kharif season as water level in Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) is lower than normal level. Water for irrigation purpose can be supplied to the districts of Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Warangal and Khammam if water level in SRSP is above the normal level. Farmers are in deep anguish as project officials are unable to tell as to when they would release water into canals.

At present, water level in SRSP is at 1067.20 feet compared to its total storage capacity of 1091 feet. In the previous year during the same month, water level in SRSP stood at 1091 feet. The project officials can release water for irrigation purpose in Nizamabad district through Laxmi canal if SRSP has good inflows.

The water level in SRSP can reach up to the maximum level if heavy rains fall in catchment areas of Maharashtra and also in Nizamabad and Adilabad districts. It is not receiving inflows from Maharashtra with the construction of Babli project.

The Supreme Court gave directions to the Maharashtra government to release water from Babli project to SRSP from July 1 to October 24 and from October 25 to June 30, the gates would be closed. So far, the project had received only 0.75 tmc water from July 1 with lifting of gates belonging to Babli project.

SRSP is losing 50 cusecs of water because of leakages. The project was designed to store up to 112 tmc water. Now, it has a capacity to store only 90 tmc water.

Officials of SRSP said that water storage capacity had reduced because of silt in the dam. Farmers are in distress as farming activity did not take place as expected even after kharif season had begun 45 days ago. Various crops in the district are raised in 2,68,770 hectares in kharif season every year. It was decided to increase cultivation up to 2,90,000 hectares in this kharif season. So far, farmers have cultivated only in 1.65 lakh hectares.
