Hyderabad: Gandhi Hospital has become the venue for a brawl between the doctors of Seemandhra and Telangana region on Tuesday. Tempers flared and tension rose, when doctors of Telangana and Seemandhra had a showdown at the administrative block resulting in stalling of out-patient services for about an hour.

Protest by a group of doctors at Gandhi Hospital on Tuesday

The trouble began when some doctors from Seemandhra noticed a poster on Gandhi Hospital premises claiming to be written by TGGDA (Telangana Government Doctors Association), asking Andhra doctors to shift their base to their native places. Enraged at the posters, doctors from Andhra region staged a dharna stating that they were being constantly ridiculed and manhandled by the TS doctors in the hospital.

Employees and doctors of the Telangana region staged a dharna demanding immediate transfer of the Andhra doctors. Tensions rose, when both parties came face to face. There were heated arguments and minor jostling. The intervention by hospital Superintendent saved the situation from turning ugly. Dr Shravan Kumar and Dr Ramesh of the TGGDA alleged that there were 300 professors, associate professors and assistants in Gandhi Hospital and Gandhi Medical College and of them 60 per cent belong to Seemandhra region.

“19 doctors of Seemandhra region are creating false propaganda and sending wrong message to the public tarnishing the image and good will of the Telanagna doctors. In this connection, we have lodged a complaint at Chilkalguda Police Station, they added.

The doctors claim that if the situation continues like this staying together in Hyderabad for 10 years will be a much more difficult. They demanded that the two governments and the Governor should resolve all such issues and ensure that the hospital functions normally.

When asked about allegations that the doctors were showing discrimination in treating the Arogyasri patients from Seemandhra, the doctors associations denied the charge and said that there was no question of discrimination when it comes to treating a patient and it will never happen.

“The differences are related to service matters between the doctors of the two states and it has nothing to do with the patients,” they said.
