Hyderabad: Poor rural roads and the continuous neglect in the development of four-lane connectivity appears to be a major road block in putting the Telangana State on fast track in the process of industrialisation.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in its survey conducted recently said Telangana was lagging behind all Southern states- Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh in the development of roads network. Of the total 540 mandals, more than 60 per cent were still connected with single or two lanes to the district head quarters. Whereas other States developed four-lane roads connecting more than 50 per cent of the mandal headquarters with districts.

The density of existing four-lane road in the State was only 20 km per 100 square km in all districts except in Khammam, where the road density was registered above 50 per cent.

The officials of the Roads and Building Department said though the rural road connectivity was developed considerably, the maintenance of the roads was not on par with the standards prescribed by the Union Ministry. The average time taken by the department to repair the damaged roads in Telangana was 20 to 30 days.

It was more than 10 days time taken by other states for the repair of the roads. The R and B officials said the road network in Telangana comprises 42 per cent of the total road length of the undivided AP and the high proportion of roads was rural roads in the new State. The major issue before the government was to develop four-lane roads in all Mandals. The department was preparing proposals to develop four-lane roads in 150 Mandals at the cost of Rs 2,000 crore. Telangana was also poor in the National Highway connectivity. The total highway stretch running through Telangana was only 1,570 km as against 4,650 in AP. The long-pending proposal to upgrade state highways into National Highways was the reason for the poor National Highway connectivity in the T State.

One hundred fourty kilometre stretch between Sangareddy-Nanded-Ankola, 108-km between Nirmal–Khanapur-Luxettipet and 132-km from Hyderabad–Bijapur via Moinabad, Chevella, Manneguda and Kodangal have been pending since years, the officials added.
