Ibrahimpatnam: With an eye on the ensuing GHMC elections, the Congress party tried to woo Seemandhra people living in GHMC limits. AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh on Monday cautioned Telangana State government against indulging in 'divisive' politics and sent clear signals that the TPCC would fight for the rights of the people of Seemandhra in the new State.
Addressing the party workers on the concluding day of the two-day brainstorming session of the Telangana Congress, Digvijay said Congress would not tolerate if the TRS government creates animosity between the people of Telangana and AP living in T state. "Every citizen has a right to live or do business anywhere in the country. Suppressing the rights of people by any government was against the spirit of Constitution," he said. The session also passed a resolution to this effect.
The AICC general secretary said the defeat of the BJP and its allies in the recently concluded byelections in Bihar, Punjab and Karnataka was a clear indication that people already got vexed with the performance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The two-day session also decided that the senior Congress leader K Jana Reddy would be the in charge for the Medak by election. This decision of the party has fuelled speculations that the party was sidelining the TPCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah. The AICC general secretary asked the Congress leaders to vigorously tour Medak LS segment and work for victory of the party in the bypoll.
The interesting aspect of the two-day session was that the TS Congress leaders, who had been hesitating to openly attack the TRS in the new State so far, took potshots at the recent decisions taken by the State government.
Former minister J Geeta Reddy wanted the party leadership to give due share for the SCs and STs in the party posts. She demanded a special wing to be set up in the party to study the issues related to the implementation of SC/ST sub-plan. Former Speaker KR Suresh Reddy wanted the party to have its own TV channel and newspaper.
He also called upon party workers to donate Rs 1000 each for establishing a TV channel and a Daily. Other senior leaders like S Jaipal Reddy were among the speakers.
