Hyderabad: Retired IAS officer M Sahoo has emerged as a strong contender for the post of the chairman of the newly constituted Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC).
Sahoo, who worked as Special Principal Secretary to State Energy Department before his superannuation in the early 2014, has been the most sought-after official by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. The committee constituted to finalise the names of the TSERC members and chairman was also inclined to give such an important post to the retired official, sources said. Sahoo was one of the long serving IAS officials in the Energy Department in the undivided Andhra Pradesh. He was instrumental in bringing many reforms in the power sector including formulation of new solar energy policy which promoted renewable energy as an immediate alternative to conventional energy sources in AP.
Another senior official and a member of the present APERC, R Ashoka Chary's name was also doing rounds for the said post. Chary, who hailed from Telangana and a member of the APERC since 2012, has also expertise in dealing with power purchase agreements (PPAs) between the government and power generation units.
In the wake of the controversy over the AP government's decision to scrap all PPAs entered by APGENCO with all Discoms, according to sources, Chary would be the right choice as he could resolve the contentious issues between AP and Telangana states.
However, the Chief Minister was taking more time to announce the name of the TSERC chairman as he was busy holding preparatory meetings for the upcoming October budget session. The officials said that after the budget session, TSERC would come into effective and the existing APERC would remain the official agency of the AP State only.
