Khammam: The city committee of the Washermen Cooperative Society demanded installation of the statue of Chakali Ilamma, one of the leaders of Telangana armed struggle, at Khammam.

The city committee meeting of the society was held at Rajaka Sangham Bhavan at Cheruvu Bazar here on Sunday. Speaking at the meeting, members of the Society explained in detail the role played by Ilamma in the fight against the dictatorial rule of Nizams. They demanded that the newly formed Telangana State government should implement the ideals followed by Ilamma.

The speakers at the meeting pointed out that the Rajakas had played a key role in achieving a separate State of Telangana. They helped in the success of the general strike during the Telangana movement.

City committee secretary of the society R Kondal, leaders K Srilakshmi and J Lakshmaiah spoke at the meeting. Society leaders B Suryam, P Krishna, J Chinna, S Srinu, G Upender, P Krishna Veni and M Nagaratnam attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, members of the society decided to take out a rally here from Pavilion Ground to the Collector’s office on Monday in support of their demand for installation of the statue of Chakali Ilamma in the city.
