Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has directed the irrigation department to demolish encroachments that have come up in FTL (Full Tank Level) limits of various tanks and lakes in 10 districts of the State. He called upon the engineering staff not to bow down to any kind of pressure in this regard. Further, he constituted a grievance cell in Irrigation Minister’s office to note down information regarding encroachments.

Speaking at the one-day workshop titled ‘Restoration of Minor Irrigation Tanks’ with engineers of Irrigation Department at JNTU auditorium, Kukatpally, KCR said the government would integrate the tank restoration works to NREGS scheme and would soon come up with a new irrigation act.

The Chief Minister said a special one-week programme would be taken up in December to sensitise people about the need to conserve water bodies. Rao said he would himself participate in desilting works in various districts during the week. He called upon engineers to take a pledge not only to revive tanks in entire Telangana but also to work with commitment to restore past glory for Minor Irrigation Department that was deliberately neglected in the unified State.

“Bachawat Tribunal allocated share of 265 TMC ft. from Godavari and Krishna rivers for minor irrigation in Telangana. It can irrigate 20 lakh acres of agriculture land. However, governments in unified State criminally neglected this sector,” he said.

Rao said the total number of water bodies including tanks and lakes in the State were estimated to be around 45,300. Of these, Medak with 7,953 tanks and Mahabubnagar with 7,099 tanks occupy top two positions. KCR told them that he was ready to spend Rs 22,500 crore for revival of the tanks.

Further, he assigned them with task of restoring 9,060 tanks each year for the next five years for which government would release Rs 4,500 crore annually. He impressed upon the need to delegate works in such a manner that every mandal in an Assembly constituency was covered. KCR assured them of providing all amenities like interest free loans for buying cars and vehicle allowance to AEs at the earliest. He further stated that laptops would be given to engineers to make their job easier.
