Hyderabad: If Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has his way, the water in Hussain Sagar, the largest man-made lake, would be devoid of pollution and bad odour soon.
KCR is mulling to organise a four-day ‘Shramadhaan’ in the city to create awareness about this drive. Besides Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues, MLAs, MLCs, and MPs as well as local politicians and general public would take part in this drive.
On Wednesday, KCR went on a sudden visit to the Hussainsagar and later held a review meeting with senior officials of GHMC, HMDA and water board at Secretariat.
Lamenting at the sorry plight of the polluted and unclean Hussainsagar Lake, which was once a source for drinking water needs of Hyderabad, the Chief Minister stressed the need of the hour was to revive it fully.
When officials told him about industrial effluents and drainage water being released into the lake, he told them to take alternative measures to avoid it. Diversion canals could be built around the lake to handle inflow of large quantities of polluted water being dumped daily. He stressed that Hussainsagar should only store the “rain water and not the drain water”
'No immersion in Hussain Sagar'
Meanwhile, Chandrasekhar Rao directed officials to make alternative arrangements for idol immersion during Ganesh Chaturthi, Durga Puja besides Bathukamma festivities. He felt idols made of Plaster of Paris were also contributing to water pollution.
He suggested building another lake in 15-20 acres near Indira Park that could be exclusively used for immersion programmes. To respect sentiments of denizens of twin cities, water in the lake should be drawn from Hussainsagar, CM said. In addition, boating activity could be set up in this lake to attract people.
Further, KCR stated that a meeting would be convened soon with Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi members, elected representatives and various organisations to discuss steps to clean Hussainsagar Lake and alternative arrangements for idol immersion.
