Hyderabad: Hyderabad City police busted the sensational AK-47 shootout case at KBR Park in Banjara Hills with the arrest of an ex-Greyhounds constable on Thursday, police said on Friday. Police recovered an AK-47 with magazine, seven live rounds, ten empty cartridges, a rope, a knife from the scene of offence and a wig from the accused possession.
Obulesu who was arrested in Kurnool on Thursday was interrogated for entire night at Maruti Gardens in Narsingi area of Ranga Reddy districts away from the media glare.
Presnting him before the media on Friday , Hyderabad CP, M Mahender Reddy said, “Obulesu joined as constable in 11 Battalion, APSP in 1998 and later joined Greyhounds in 2002 and served till March 2014. An AK-47 was found missing from the armoury of Greyhounds at Gandipet in December of last year during which period the suspect was still working in Greyhounds.” Based on the above incident, a case under Section 307, 364 (A) of the IPC and Section 25 (1) (b) and 27 of Indian Arms Act was registered at Banjara Hills police station and took up investigation.
During the course of investigation, the crime scene was processed in detail with the help of Clues team and fingerprint experts. The assistance of the victim was taken to construct a portrait of the suspect and the same was released to the media. Following which several teams were formed and he was finally tracked in Kurnool Town.
During the investigation, the accused confessed that he had stolen the rifle from the Bell of Arms of Greyhounds with an intention to commit extortion and wanted to select a biggie for ransom and thus selected K Nityananda Reddy who arrived in a luxurious car on the spot on Wednesday.
“In February, he collected a ransom of Rs 10 lakh from the same spot from a victim after taking him to Kotthur in Mahaboobnagar district. Since no formal complaint was lodged in the case, no action could be taken by police,” Reddy said adding that he will be sent to judicial remand.
