A cold war over the payment of electricity bill dues totalling Rs.1.8 crore by local municipality is on between Telangana Transco and the civic body.

  • Power supply to municipal office snapped for non-payment of dues
  • Municipal officials in retaliation take possession of fuse call office

Vikarabad: A cold war over the payment of electricity bill dues totalling Rs.1.8 crore by local municipality is on between Telangana Transco and the civic body. The Transco officials have cut power supply to the municipal office. But the municipal officials, in retaliation, took possession of the fuse call office near the vegetable market, claiming that it was built without permission. They put up a board saying it was a “property tax dues collection centre.” According to H Suresh, vice-chairman of the municipality, the power dues mounted to Rs.1.8 crore during the tenure of the special officer. He claimed on Friday that the Transco officials disregarded an assurance by Minister T Harish Rao to make payment of dues. The municipal officials alleged that the Transco also ignored a promise by local MLA that the dues would be paid during the ensuing Assembly Budget session.

Local Transco Divisional Engineer Sambasiva Rao claimed that the power dues were not paid by the municipality even after several reminders, besides offers of payment in instalments. Rao stated that the municipal officials failed to honour their promise of remitting the amount by December 7 last. The whole issue appeared to be a clash of egos with the government paying Rs.1.06 crore on Friday.

Municipal Commissioner J Naik is angry with Transco for disconnecting the supply questioning how it could do so without intimation. He sought to know how Transco could raise a building without municipal permission with a warning that the illegal structure near the vegetable market would be seized by the civic body.
