Hyderabad: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has decided to focus its attention on Old City keeping an eye on the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections and to gain a foothold in the Old City areas. Keeping this in view, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is likely to visit the Old City next week. He is expected to visit some slums and may even announce a special package for their development. Several representatives from the Old City areas, seeking benefits under the weaker sections housing scheme, expressed their desire to meet the Chief Minister.

“The Chief Minister is likely to announce a scheme to provide housing to the financially weak residents of Old City,” party leader Rashid Shareef said on Sunday. The Chief Minister is likely to distribute cheques to some of the beneficiaries of ‘Shaadi Mubarak’ scheme during the programme.

According to Shareef, who is also the in-charge of Hyderabad Parliamentary constituency, nearly 3,000 applications under ‘Shaadi Mubarak’ scheme were forwarded for approval. Under the scheme, Rs 51,000 will be provided to poor Muslim girls at the time of their marriage. The party workers started collecting the details of those eligible under the weaker sections housing programme and the data will be forwarded to the government. TRS leaders are also said to be preparing a wish-list for the Old City to be presented to the Chief Minister during his visit. It includes demands like conversion of Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) from a registered society to a full-fledged authority with sufficient budget allocations. The leaders also took up the issue of regularisation of nearly 2,800 contract employees of GHMC. They claim that a majority of these workers hail from the Old City and living in deplorable conditions due to non-regularisation of services. They submitted a memorandum on this issue to Deputy Chief Minister Mahmood Ali on Saturday.

Officials too are busy collecting details on various projects of Old City. They include Charminar pedestrianisation and Musi river cleaning. The Chief Minister is also likely to interact with police officials on the law and order and crime situation. The South Zone police recently closed the rowdy sheets of nearly 200 youth of Old City.
