Nalgonda: The famous Peddagattu jathra, which is also known as Lingamanthula Swamy jathra and Gollagattu jathra, got off to a tumultuous start at Durajpally with the shifting of divine box (Devarapette) from Kesaram village to the temple on Sunday midnight.

Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy performed special pooja to “Deverapette” at the residence of Menthaboina family at Kesaram of Suryapet mandal. Later, the divine box, which contains idols of Lingamanthula Swamy and Chowdamma, was taken in a procession to Peddagattu amid chants of “Oo Linga... Oo Linga” by devotees, who wore traditional dresses and held thrishulas.

Right from the crack of dawn on Monday, the women devotees clad in traditional attire offered Bonalu to Goddess Chowdamma. The devotees along with the sacrificial goats went around the temple by performing traditional dances. The premises of the temple reverberated with the traditional drum-beats and “Oo Linga” chants by the devotees. Even though the government has allocated Rs 10 lakhs for traditional clothes for Yadavas, there were less number of devotees wearing traditional clothes and holding “thrishulas”, which are synonymous for bi-annual jathra.

Tents have been pitched at various points leading to Peddagattu shrine as lakhs of devotees, who came from the state and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, made their own arrangements for their stay. The cement road near Peddagattu, koneru, dressing rooms for women and water tanks for bathing have been provided to avoid inconvenience to the devotees this year. The steps provided on three sides to the shrine have also ensured free flow of devotees and avoided the pushing and jostling by the frenzied devotees.

The health department has set-up camps at several points and made available the medicines to the needy people. The district police had also made elaborate security arrangements by posting 1,000 police personnel at the jathra.
