Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to shoot a missive to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) asking them not to grant fresh permissions for setting up engineering colleges in the State.

The decision by the government comes in wake of widespread increase in the number of errant engineering colleges in the State. The State government wants to apprise AICTE and the MHRD about the decline of engineering education standards in the State.

With the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTU-H) expert committee’s report in the place, the government wants to press hard on the Centre to not accord fresh permissions.

“Number of students clearing Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (Eamcet), seats available and seats falling vacant after admissions will be stated in the letter. If the Centre gives permissions, we are not in a position to handle the situation,” said an official of education department. A top official of education department said without taking up necessity study of new colleges, AICTE has went ahead and gave permissions.

Meanwhile, as many as 20 professional colleges have applied for the closure from the next academic year.

According to AICTE sources, in the wake of decision by the JNTU-Hyderabad to dis-affiliate 143 colleges, the number colleges applying for closure would go up. “This year we have not received single application from the managements for opening of new colleges,” AICTE official said.
