Khammam: Tests conducted by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), in association with Reliance Geo and the Police Department, revealed that there was no threat to human life due to the Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) radiation from cell phone towers.

A team of officials conducted Electro Magnetic Emission (EME) tests at various places in Khammam in a bid to clear apprehensions of the people on possible health hazards of cell towers. Speaking at an awareness programme at the Zilla Parishad Centre here on Thursday, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dakshina Murthy said people need not worry about health hazards as the cell towers in the city recorded radiation within permissible limits, i.e., 1,000 milliwatts per square metre as per the guidelines issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). “Even the World Health Organisation (WHO) clarified that there was no harm so long as EMF radiation levels in the vicinity of base stations of cell phone towers are below the permissible limits,” the DSP said.

Reliance representative Sadanandam said Khammam would soon turn into digital city as 4G services would be introduced. Stating that no cell phone tower was allowed to emit radiation of more than 1,000 milliwatts per square metre as per the DoT guidelines, radiation expert E Vijay Kumar said any infringement would attract no less than Rs 10 lakh fine from the operator.

All cell phone towers in the city recorded EMF radiation of around 2.4 milliwatts per square metre, he claimed.
