Hyderabad: Telangana Government’s endeavor is to provide better amenities to suit the present-day needs for effective policing by taking up modernisation of the police force in a big way and thus improve the brand image of Hyderabad. Stating this during question hour, Home Minister N Narasimha Reddy said that as part of this exercise, the Police Department has purchased Innova cars and motor cycles to increase the mobility of the police personnel.

The total budget allocation for procurement of these vehicles was over Rs.206.37 crore and as of now an amount of Rs.168.98 crore was already spent. The remaining amount of nearly Rs.38 crore would be utilized wherever such vehicles were needed. The Home Minister further said that the 694 Innova cars and 7,200 motor cycles were purchased and made available to the police personnel of various police stations.

Like in the US where police response to people in distress is very swift and quick, the police here should also work on the same lines, he said and for this purpose the government was taking all steps to modernize the force and provide them with latest vehicles and equipment. The Home Minister refuted the charge of Congress member D K Aruna that there was a quid pro quo in the government after deciding to purchase 1,500 Innova cars, but only bought 694 Innovas and later acquired Tata vehicles. Regarding the demand for recruiting more police personnel including drivers, he said that DGP had already submitted proposal for creating 36230 new posts of constables and drivers and it is under consideration.
