Tourist spots in Mahabubnagar
Mahabubnagar: With the onset of summer, people start heading for cool and pleasant hill stations like Ooty and Kodaikanal, Kulumanali or Araku Valley to escape from the scorching heat. However, there is no need to go that far as there are more beautiful places of attraction here in the Nallamala forest areas of Mahabunagar district, which could be developed into famous tourist centres.
They are the Mallelatheertham waterfalls, Saleshwaram, Umamaheshwaram and Loddi Mallanna temple found in the Acchampet constituency in the district. A visit to these places gives immense joy. While going to Srisailam from Hyderabad, there is a dense area in the Nallamala forest division and near to it is the Vatavarla village. After travelling for 8 km again, we come across the beautiful Mallelatheertham waterfalls, 180 km from Hyderabad. However, there are no proper facilities here and the tourist spot remained neglected over the years.
Although the locals want Mallelatheertham to be developed, the government is hesitating to take up the developmental works which would disturb the wildlife habitat here. Another beautiful tourist destination in the drought-stricken Mahabubnagar district is Saleshwaram, where a famous temple of Lord Shiva, on par with the Amarnath temple in Jammu & Kashmir, exists. People in large numbers visit this temple as it is kept open only for three days in a year. It is kept open for three days either in March or April.
However, it is not easy to visit this temple as pilgrims have to overcome several hurdles travelling through a difficult terrain between two hills, amidst waterfalls and steep valleys to take the darshan of the Shivalingam. After travelling for 15 km to the deep forest area from the Parahabad view point, the devotees have to walk for another 5 km, through an extremely dangerous terrain. If, by chance, the walkers are careless, they fall into the deep valley below. Devotees firmly believe that visiting the temple on a full moon day would fulfill their desires.
Owing to the Maoist menace, no development activities were taken up in this region. Speaking to The Hans India, the devotees expressed the hope that developmental activities would be taken up near the temple with the formation of the Telangana State and the receding of the Maoist menace. They want the temple to be kept open for at least 20 days.
Another famous temple near the Nallamala forest area, 500 km from the sea level, is the Umamaheshwara Temple where Brahmotavams are held for nine days every year. The legend has that Lord Rama started his journey to Sri Lanka to slay the demon king Ravana after worshipping at this temple. The government should take appropriate measures to develop these places into tourist spots and develop the tourism industry in the State.
