Warangal: Christian community in the district observed Good Friday with religious fervour and solemnity on Friday. Special after-noon prayers, which included Stations of the Cross, were conducted at the churches marking the occasion. Thousands of devotees joined the prayers. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary outside Jerusalem in Israel in 33 AD.
Good Friday which also called as Holy Friday is a day of mourning and quiet prayer for Christians. Catholics treat Good Friday as a day of fasting. This is an important event in Christianity, as it represents the sacrifices and suffering in Jesus' life. The crucifixion was the culmination of a number of events in Holy Week, including the triumphal return of Jesus to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday; the washing of the disciples' feet by Jesus and the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday.
Prayers were conducted at St Fatima Cathedral and Velangani Matha Church in Kazipet, Epiphany Church at Dornakal, Centenary Baptist Church and St Mary’s Church in Hanamkonda and various other Churches across the district. At Fatima Cathedral Warangal Bishop Udumala Bala led the prayer service while the parish priest Eruva Chinnapa Reddy and others were present. Forgiveness and love were the main precepts taught by Jesus and every Christian should try to emulate such qualities, the Bishop said.
Crucifixion of Jesus holds great hope and redemption for every person on earth, he said adding a happy life and a peaceful death were the most important factors in any persons’ life. The Bishop on the day visited many villages in the district offering prayers and taking part in Stations of the Cross. In Dharmasagar mandal the Stations of the Cross depicting the incidents on the way to Jesus’ Crucifixion were enacted at villages like Unikicharla, Rapakapalli, Veleru, Mupparam Karunapuram and at At St. Anthony Church at mandal headquarters.
Night vigil would be held at St Fatima Cathedral during mid-night hours of Saturday followed by Easter prayers during the early hours of Sunday. Easter is one of the most festive events for the Christians worldwide as it commemorates Jesus Christ’s resurrection from death, as written in the Christian Bible.
