The armed men who were chased by various police teams fired on the police team killing constable Nagaraju on the spot and in retaliatory firing, both of them were shot dead," DGP Anurag Sharma said adding that SI Siddaiah and CI Gangi Reddy were injured in the incident.

In fact, the police got a tip off from some locals when the two assailants wanted to know the route to Sitapuram village. The locals alerted the police that two persons on a bike were speaking in Hindi and wanted to confirm if they were on right path. The police stations in and around Janakipuram of Mothkur mandal, the scene of incident, were alerted and teams moved out. The team led by CI Gangi Reddy was the first to spot them. The gangsters were coming in the opposite direction and on seeing the police they opened fire with their weapons killing a constable and injuring the SI.

In the retaliatory fire, the two suspects were killed and were identified as Aslam Ayub and Zakheer Badrum. According to the DGP, during the search in the district, police received information that some suspicious characters were taking shelter in a Dargah at Arvapally near Janakipuram. But before the police could reach the place on Friday night, the suspects seeing the police party escaped on a motor-cycle.

Both the injured CI and SI were brought to the city and admitted to Kamineni Hospital. While the condition of the CI is stated to be stable, the SI’s position was critical as he had received as many as four bullet injuries. One bullet was still imbedded in the brain and doctors are trying to perform an operation. The SI also received bullet injuries in the head, chest and abdomen.

The DGP who flew in to the site of incident in an helicopter in the morning and later accompanied Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy, said the weapons used in Suryapet incident and those recovered at the encounter site were the same. Moreover, the bus tickets to travel from Hyderabad to Vijayawada were also found at the spot. It helped confirm that those killed in the encounter were the culprits who shot dead two policemen in Suryapet bus station. The Home Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 40 lakhs to the constable who died in the encounter.
