Adilabad: Following the stoppage of Sirpur Paper Mills (SPM) paper production at Kagaznagar , the workers are forced to become daily wage labourers to earn their livelihood. The management stopped paper production on September 27, 2014, citing losses. The financial difficulties of the SPM workers began from the time the management had stopped paper production.

The workers have been leading miserable lives to make ends meet as they are not getting salaries. Workers are not able to pay school fees of their kids. So far, five workers have committed suicide owing to financial problems. With the management not willing to revive paper production, several workers of SPM have become daily labourers to meet their family needs. While some of them have become auto drivers, some others are going to nearby villages of Kagaznagar to take up daily works.

However, non-availability of daily works in Kagaznagar town and its surrounding villages is also hitting them hard. The workers catch trains to Mancherial town in the morning and wait at points meant for labourers with a hope that someone might engage them for work. There are many instances of SPM workers pleading for work from those who are looking for daily workers. Some of them are so desperate that they are taking up work in construction sites also.

The workers who earlier used to earn around Rs 700 to Rs 800 per day at SPM are now struggling to earn even Rs 200 per day in Mancherial town. The family members of SPM workers, especially women, are also working as daily wage labourers to their meet daily financial needs. The SPM workers are requesting the State government to take initiative to revive the paper production at SPM to save them from financial woes.
