National Human Rights Commission on Thursday has decided to take up the serious issue hovering and has directed the TS government to submit a comprehensive report on the reasons for farmers suicide increase, relief and rehabilitation measures for the affected families along with the necessary steps taken by the government to prevent these suicides.

Earlier, NHRC issued notice to Telangana Government on farmers’ suicide in November 2014. With over 700 farmers committing suicide since the formation of Telangana in June 2014, the affected families approached NHRC stating that only 96 suicide cases have been looked into so far.

Also, the affected families brought to the Commission’s notice that the government was providing only Rs 1.5 lakh as compensation which is not sufficient and demanded Rs 5 lakh compensation as most of the farmers who committed suicide were aged below 35 years and their entire families had been ruined on account of the suicides.

Principal Secretary of revenue, Mr R.K. Meena submitted the district collector reports before the Commission which said that 96 farmers committed suicide and said that the Telangana government had waived off crop loans up to Rs 1 lakh, and majority of the farmers had benefitted.

The Commission, headed by Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, after hearing both versions from the complainants and the government, directed TS to submit a comprehensive report on suicides by farmers and the preventive measures taken to stop them.
