Khammam: Reputed for being one of the fast-growing horticulture hubs, Aswaraopet stays way ahead of all other regions in Telangana for producing quality seedlings of various horticulture crops. Aswaraopet mandal is an ideal place for production of horticulture crops. The prevalence of favourable agro-climatic conditions, which ensures raising a variety of crops, invited many a private horticulture nursery in the region.

Apart from Horticulture Research Station, Coconut Seed Garden, and Oil palm nursery in Achyuthapuram, there are at least 150 private nurseries in the mandal. Besides fruit and vegetable crops which are amongst horticulture crops, the region is also famous for producing a superior quality maize seed.

The maize cultivated in Aswaraopet and the neighbouring Dammapet mandals are ideal for seed processing. Procuring the maize crop from these mandals, multi-national companies are doing a brisk business. Apart from maize, the nurseries in the region are also making huge profits by producing the mango, cashew and sapota (sapodilla) seed.

The superior quality seed nut and seedlings of hybrid coconut variety produced in about 49 acres by the Coconut Seed Garden in Aswaraopeta are widely regarded as famous in the country. Ganga, Malayan Orange, Yellow Dwarf and Chowghat Orange Dwarf are some of famous seed varieties produced in the coconut seed garden.

Naramvarigudem nursery is the only source of supplying oil palm seedlings to the farmers in Dammapet and Aswaraopet mandals, which are famous for oil palm cultivation. The seedlings produced here are also supplied to both the Godavari districts. The seedlings of variety horticulture crops produced in Aswaraopet and Dammapet mandals are being exported to Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, AP and Maharashtra.

Speaking to The Hans India, Assistant Director of Horticulture K Suryanarayana said that the government in a bid to support horticulture crops is not only providing subsidy but also providing expertise to the farmers. “Khammam district plays a vital role in transforming Telangana as seed bowl of the country,” he said, while pointing to the measure taken by the government for the development of horticulture.
