Hyderabad: The teacher education in the State is losing its sheen. The number of applicants for Telangana Education Common Entrance Test (EdCET) this year has drastically come down. In the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh State, about 1.16 lakh candidates applied for the BEd course from the Telangana region and this year, the number of applicants stood at 63,321 only. This means, the number of applicants has plummeted to half the number in contrast to the last year.

The reason for the drop in number of applicants was because of enhancement of BEd courses from one year to two years by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) from the next academic year. In this regard, the Council had also issued orders to all the universities and colleges to prepare curriculum which suits the two-year course. As per the orders issued by the NCTE, the Telangana government has changed the course duration and entrusted the Osmania University to conduct the entrance examination.

Earlier in erstwhile AP State, Andhra University had conducted the test for 23 districts. “About 1.74 lakh candidates applied in the united Andhra Pradesh, as there was news that course duration would be increased from 2015. Now that course duration is increased, the number of applications has come down,” said Prof Prasad, Convener EdCET and Dean Education, OU.

As per the details, the Social Studies course seems to be a good choice for the candidates. This year as many as 30,028 candidates registered for Social Studies, while 15,333 for the Biological Sciences. And about 12,788 candidates for Mathematics, 4,303 for Physical Science and 869 for English registered for the test.

It may be noted that the NCTE had relaxed norms and allowed engineering graduates to take BEd course in Mathematics and Physical Sciences. This year about 25 per cent of applicants for Mathematics and Physical Sciences are from the engineering stream.

“Engineering graduates taking BEd courses is a good sign as it would strengthen the school education system. About 3,000 students in Mathematics and Physical Sciences applied this year,” Prasad informed. There about 25,000 seats in 250 colleges across the State. The entrance examination would be conducted on June 6 from 11 am to 1 pm. The test would be conducted at 140 centres in 13 towns across the 10 districts.
