Hyderabad: Former Union Minister Anand Sharma on Wednesday criticised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making “boastful claims.” The healthy economy left by the UPA government had been completely ruined by NDA, he said. Speaking to media persons here at Gandhi Bhavan, he said under the UPA government, the GDP had “quadrupled.” He explained that despite global challenges, there was positive account balance, the Forex reserves were Rs 300 billion, exports were $ 316 million and Rupee stood at 59 in exchange to dollar.
He said the NDA government had not been able to sustain this, as the industrial production fell to 0.1 in the core sector, the job creation remained myth. Giving an example of how the people were being fooled by marketing of ‘Make in India,’ he said the buying of fighter jets initiated by the UPA government also included provision “maintenance and transfer of technology.”
More than 100 jets were to be manufactured in India, while licence and technology transfer was to be made to HAL (Hindustan Aeronauts Limited). Now, after NDA government took forward the deal, the HAL had been cut out of the picture. Moreover, for the fifth generation Aircraft would not share the technology with India, he added.
While claiming that the Modi government was taking forward the policies of the UPA, he said the Prime Minister had lost his “state of mind,” while being on foreign soil. Referring to his statements and words like “scam India,” during his foreign tours, the former Union Minister said Modi had caused “national embarrassment,” by referring it as corrupt country prior to his taking to power.
“It means that he is not only questioning the administration of Nehru but also Atal Behari Vajpayee,” said the senior Congress leader. Answering a question on the Prime Minister’s planned visit to Israel, he said that Modi was free to decide his itinerary, but while visiting sensitive areas he must be cautious.
He said India had maintained firm relationship with Palestinians from the days of Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru. According to him, Prime Minister had actually undermined the balance in terms foreign policy, as he had not visited the countries of the Middle East. He has diluted India’s consistent position on Palestine. India had vital interests in Gulf and over seven million diaspora lives, he added.
