Hyderabad: The Congress, which has been opposing the government decision to take up the project at Kaleshwaram, has now got the backing of irrigation and power experts Venkata Ranga Reddy and Venugopal Rao, who visited the Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday.

They held a meeting with the TPCC leaders including working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, MP Palvai Govardhan Reddy, former PCC chief P Narsa Reddy, MLC M Ranga Reddy, TPCC Kisan Cell Chairman M Kodanda Reddy and other leaders. The TPCC reiterated its demand to the State government that the Pranahita-Chevella project should be taken up from Tummuddi Hatti, the spot finalised by the earlier government after making a detailed study.

Later speaking to media persons, Bhatti Vikramarka explained that Tummuddi Hatti being the high point would serve the purpose of the project and with the help of gravity the water could reach Yellampally, which was about 100 kms away and would save power. He asked the government to avoid controversies by politicising the project initiated by the then Congress government.

“If the government continues with its plans, then the Congress will launch an agitation for the sake of people,” he warned. Meanwhile, Congress leaders representing Mahbubnagar decided to visit the Palamur, Koilsagar, Nettempadu and Bhima projects on July 24 and 25. The decision was taken by the districts leaders, who held a meeting at the residence of former Minister D K Aruna on Wednesday evening.
