Hyderabad: The State-wide bandh called by the 10 Left parties in support of Municipal sanitation workers went off peacefully on Friday. In Hyderabad, leaders of the Left parties, including CPI State secretary Chada Venkat Reddy, CPI-M State secretary Thammineni Veerabhadram and others staged sit-in at MGBS Bus Station early in the morning and stopped the buses from coming out of the depot. The police swung into action and took them into custody. They were shifted them to a nearby police station.
The Left parties accused the government of taking unilateral decision without taking the workers into confidence. They expressed concern over the government restricting the salary hike only to GHMC workers. Greater Hyderabad TDP president C Krishna Yadav said the Telangana State government was trying to break the unity of the workers.
The leaders demanded that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao announce salary hike for all Municipal workers. They organised a rally from Narayanaguda to Abids. On the other hand, the TDP and Congress parties expressed their solidarity with the Left-sponsored bandh. Sanitation workers at Hayathnagar staged a sit-in at Hayathnagar bus depot. They obstructed the buses from coming out of the depot.
Speaking on the occasion, CITU mandal secretary Kishan said they would continue their fight till the government solved the problems of the sanitation workers. In Gajwel, the Chief Minister’s home constituency in Medak district, sanitation workers staged a protest at the bus depots at Gajwel and Pragnapur.
Left Parties, TDP and Congress extended their support to the sanitation workers agitation. Speaking on the occasion, TDP State official spokesperson Prathap Reddy demanded that the State government immediately address the grievances of the workers. In Hanamkonda in Warangal district, sanitation workers laid a siege to the Hanamkonda bus stand.
The CPI, CPI-M and other political parties’ leaders extended their support to the bandh. Congress leaders Baswaraju Saraiah, Errabelli Swarna, T Vidyasagar, TDP leaders G Sathyanarayana Rao, A Murali, G Sambaiah, BJP leaders M Dharma Rao, CPI, CPI-M leaders Karunakar, Krishna Reddy and others participated in the bandh.
