Hyderabad: Various departments of the famed Osmania General Hospital (OGH) will be shifted within a week, apparently due to bad condition of the heritage building. Chief Minister K Chan- drashekar Rao, on Thursday, an- nounced this after visiting the age- old OGH in the afternoon along with Health Minister Dr C Lak- shma Reddy, Chief Secretary to the government Rajiv Sharma, Principal Secretary, Health, Suresh Chanda, Director of Medical Education Dr Ramani and Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad Commissioner DR Veena Kumari. The Chief Minister spent about 20 minutes to survey the building.

After that, he discussed with the OGH doctors about the shifting of the hospital. Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said that the historical OGH was built 110 years ago. It was now in dilapidated state. No one knew when it would fall and if further neglected, it could lead to a catastrophe, he said. Quoting a report that was submitted by the JNTU, he said if the repair works were undertaken, the OGH could be used for a maxi- mum of another three years.

Chandrashekar Rao said, “To save the lives of patients, doctors, technicians, and nursing students, the inpatient wings of OGH would be shifted within a week to other government hospitals or if possible to a private building,” Rao said. He said the government was consid- ering amending the Heritage Act and would request the Governor and the High Court Chief Justice to visit and examine the building.

OGH served not only people of 10 districts of Telangana but also from patients from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maha- rashtra, he added. Regarding losing of medical seats if the hospital was shifted, Rao said that the government would speak to the MCI Chairman for relaxation of rules as a special case. Speaking to The Hans India, the Telangana Doctors’ Association honorary president Dr Bongu Ramesh and Save Osmania Joint Action Committee Chairman Dr Nagender said surgical depart- ments would be shifted to King Koti and medical departments to Gachibowli.

In view of distance, the government would provide transportation facility to the pa- tients, doctors and other staff, they said. Meanwhile, the OGH Superintendent has proposed to shift General Medicine, Medical Gastroenterology, Dermotology and jail ward (316 beds) to Ronald Ross Institute, General Surgery, Surgical Gastroenterology and post operative ward (356 beds) to Niloufer Hospital and Nampally, Malkapet and Vanasthalipuram Area Hospitals.

Orthopaedic including post outpatient beds (120) beds will be shifted to King Koti Hospital and Neurolgy Surgical Ward with 46 beds to Gandhi Hospital. A team of OGH doctors have been asked to visit government hospitals and submit a report and based on this, the Chief Minister would take action, they said.
