Hyderabad: As many as 1,039 farmers committed suicides in Telangana alone in just 14 months after the formation of the State, said Telangana Farmers Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Saturday. The Farmers JAC, which held a State-level meeting at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Bagh Lingampalli, was attended by hundreds of farmers, academicians and others.

The JAC appealed to the farmers not to commit suicides out of frustration following delay or uncertainty on waiver of loans and assured them that they would stand by them in their hour of crisis. Speaking on the occasion, former High Court judge Justice Chandra Kumar said the State government was not acting in the interest of farmers.

He felt that the government, instead of securing the lives of farmers who were in crises, was welcoming big corporate houses with red carpet, offering land, electricity and all other concessions to set up industries. The High Court judge demanded provision of quality seeds, fertilizers and crop insurance to put an end to farmers’ suicides.

Farmers who participated in Telangana agitation with the hope that they would have better living standards after the bifurcation were now committing suicides due to the governments' negligence, said Botham Veraiah, a farmer union leader. It is pathetic that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao till date had not made any statement appealing to the farmers not to resort to suicides, he added.

The meeting demanded amendment of GO 421 pertaining to provision of relief to the families of farmers who committed suicide and increase of ex-gratia to Rs 5 lakhs each. It also demanded provision of free insurance, seeds and fertilizers to the farmers who owned less than 5 acre land. They further said that the government should give minimum support price as directed by the Swaminathan committee.

The committee decided to mount pressure on the State government if it continued to drag its feet on waiver of all types of agriculture loans. The committee asked the government to cancel GO 69 relating to waiver of crop loans up to Rs 1,00,000 and provide patta to the podu lands.

The committee took strong objection to Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh’s statement that farmers were committing suicides due to ‘impotency and love affairs.’ The meeting was attended by TJAC chief Prof Kondandaram, activists Prof KR Chowdary, Prof Hara Gopal, The Hans India editor Prof K Nageshwar and Rythu Sangham president Pasya Padma.
