Govt spurs corporates to adopt 100 schools

Hyderabad: The Digital India programme, an initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has the potential to help the Telangana State too. The Telangana State government has taken the advantage of the programme and asked the corporate organisations to take up computer literacy programme in the government schools.
The organisations have come forward to adopt 100 schools, 10 each in every district, in the State and provide computer literacy to the students and teachers as well. The move by the government comes after corporate companies helped successfully complete the construction of the toilets in the government schools recently.
The government is under the process of selecting the schools in the districts and programme will begin on the occasion of Teacher’s Day on September 5. The corporate organisations have agreed to teach basics of computer language to the students and classes will be held twice in a week.
The corporates will also train teachers from medium to high level computer knowledge. Besides adoption of 100 schools, the government wants the corporates to give free training to teachers in 2,000 schools. By training the teachers, the government would like to change the teaching methodology in schools from blackboard to digital board.
In this regard, it is also in the process of procuring portable projectors for the digital initiative. Presently 2,157 high schools and 1,516 primary schools have sections for imparting computer related knowledge to students. The facility remains non-functional in the absence of instructors. Earlier computer education in the government schools was entrusted to five agencies like NIIT and Educomp.
The programme could not yield good results as the organisations failed to impart the quality education, officials said.
Commissioner of School Education Department, T Chiranjeevulu said the government intended to ensure that the teachers become computer literate to help switch from blackboard to digital methodology in schools.
“The digital content on environment sciences can be used by all the schools. Similarly we want teachers to develop content for other subjects like sciences and languages,” Chiranjeevulu said.Apart from it, the government is determined to start English medium sections from primary to high school. In this regard, it is planning to organise spoken English classes for about six months for the teachers.
