Hyderabad: A two-judge bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice SV Bhatt on Thursday gave a green signal for the immersion of Ganesh idols in the Hussain Sagar lake. Dealing with a contempt petition filed by Mamidi Venu Madhav, a practising advocate from the city, the bench directed the state government (Telangana) and officials of the GHMC to ensure steps for immersion of idols in separate ponds from the next year onwards.

Telangana Advocate General Ramakrishna Reddy informed the court that as per the earlier court orders, the police and GHMC along with other departments concerned had taken steps to remove the remains of the idols, accumulated debris and other waste materials within 24 hours of the immersion. The bench granted six weeks time to the state government to place an action plan restricting the heights of the idols and immersion of idols in separate ponds before it and adjourned the matter.
