Hyderabad: The Telangana State government has given strict instructions to banks not to not collect interest on crop loans from farmers in the State. They have also been directed to refund excess interest and other charges wherever collected since TRS government came to power.
Since RBI and State government were bearing the interest burden, farmers should not be forced to repay crop loans, the government told the bankers.Stating this after the State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) of Telangana State, the Finance Minister Eatala Rajender and Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said until now a total of Rs 7,000 crore was paid to banks towards waiver of crop loans benefitting 16 lakh farmers.
Banks were also told to hand over annexure-f form signed by respective manager to farmers once the crop loan was cleared. Instructions were given to bankers to continue give fresh loans to farmers without creating difficulties. The area under cultivation came down to 34.08 lakh hectares out of total area 41.43 lakh hectares due to deficit in rainfall, he pointed out/ Rajender said the credit plan had been increased to Rs 78,776 crore as against Rs 72, 119 crore in the past.
The State was on the progress path with top priority giving to welfare and industry sectors. He appealed to the bankers to lend their helping hand to rescue farmers from distress. He stated that irregularities were seen in clearing of crop loans that resulted in leakage of Rs 800 crore in the last two years.
Violations like clearing loan of above Rs 1 lakh, clearing loans of members of same family, etc, were noticed by the Audit Department. The government would not spare anyone.
