Khammam: A special party police and the CPI-ML New Democracy (Chandranna band) underground group exchanged fire in a brief encounter in a forest area under Yellandu constituency in Khammam district on Saturday evening.

According to sources, the special party police came across the underground New Democracy group led by Ashok when they were conducting a combing operation near Pandipampula forest area, 18 km from Yellandu.
The police and the ultras exchanged fire for about 10 minutes, it is learnt. No casualties were reported so far. Sources said police went to the spot following a tip-off that there was a movement of the activists belonging to the banned outfit.

Meanwhile, the incident raised many eyebrows as it happened a day after some key leaders of the New Democracy (Chandranna Dalam) joined the Rayala group. It may be mentioned here that Chandranna dalam is advocating armed struggle.

CPI-ML (Rayala group) secretary P Ranga Rao condemned the police conducing combing operations in the forests.
