Hyderabad is scripting a new chapter in the start-up ecosystem with the Telangana Hub (T-Hub), India’s largest incubation facility 70,000 sq.ft will be operational in sync with the ‘Digital Telangana’ campaign on the lines of ‘Digital India’ and big push is being given for start-ups by the Telangana Government.

In the West, universities played a big role in nurturing young talent, which ultimately created huge IT companies, recognising the potential of youngsters, who have great ideas for start-ups, the Telangana government has initiated to boost start-up ecosystem in Hyderabad and has taken up T-Hub, which will provide similar environment to Indian start-ups. After the formation of Telangana, Hyderabad has edge over other cities to boost Indian start-up ecosystem in 2015.Recently, the government has doubled the IT exports from the State from Rs. 63,000 crore to Rs. 1.20 lakh crore.
The T-hub addresses the gaps in the existing system in a way it makes the city as an emerging hub of opportunities for entrepreneurs for starts-up and promote Hyderabad as start-up capital of India, as the city is expected to attract start-up entrepreneurs globally bolstered with strong IT sector and unleash the entrepreneurial spirit amongst new age youth.
The key challenges that starts-up are facing today are the ideation, seed funding/bootstrapping, creating market, facilitating the scalability of the idea and connecting with Angel investors and Venture Capital Funds. Creating clusters of innovation around a vertical -- Healthcare, IoT (internet of things), Smart cities, Agro-tech and Fintech (financial technologies) and the likes – is the in thing.
What exactly T-Hub will do, it helps the entrepreneurs to find the right resources, funders for the domain, incubators and accelerators in respective domain and connect the peers in the community and to help to protect IP. The T-hub also helps the start-ups with the marketing facility. If a start-up abroad is looking for a market in India or vice-versa, T-hub facilitates the same.
T-Hub is a unique incubation center by public and private partnership between the government of Telangana, 3 of India’s premier academic institutes (IIIT-H, ISB & NALSAR) and key private sector leaders.
While experts from the Indian School of Business will provide business mentorship, technology experts from the Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad and the Indian Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad will serve tech related needs of the startup firms. The Nalsar University of Law will provide support in terms of intellectual property, legal and patenting rights.
It stands at the innovation, academic, corporate and research. Its mission is to catalyst the growth of Hyderabad into one of the tightest and most vibrant start-up communities in the world, and that mission is anchored by the creation of a state-of-the-art60,000 square foot building called Catalyst, the largest building in India to be entirely dedicated to entrepreneurship. T-Hub will have three levels – Launch Pad, Accelerator and Propeller and all are put in this catalyst.
Besides this, the Government of Telangana has already embarked on another facility which is five times bugger in size compared to the current one. The three-lakh sq. ft structure would come up near Rayadurgam, closer to the HITEC City in Hyderabad.T-Hub will provide one central location form members of the local start-up community and investors to network, learn, communicate, share and make deals.
T-Hub to be the incubator of incubators is one is India’s first world class Tech incubator with Government support, what Hyderabad has always lacked is access to mentors who can add real value and aggressive investors, but so many mentors and investors include industry veterans from India and Silicon Valley have invested upto Rs 6.00 crores and the State Government pitching in with Rs 40 crore and other directors with Rs 10 crore.
The government has also announced US$100-million venture capital fund for financial assistance for start-ups, if they are housed in T-hub. The Government has planned to send a delegation of fund managers to Europe, Gulf and other Asian countries to raise funds for their initiative.
While envisioning the phase-II facility, the start-up ecosystem in Hyderabad is creating an Rs 100 crore innovation fund, of which Rs 20 crore would be the contribution from the Government of Telangana, which dons the role of anchor. The rest would be from several other stakeholders.
As many as four angel networks, 30 seed funds and 20 venture capital funds have been roped in to participate in accelerating the start-up activity. It is expected that at least 25-30 start-ups, would have their own start-ups in a year time and it will continued, though no specific investments can be expected as of now, but over 300 start-ups which have enrolled themselves have committed to make use of the offerings and committed investments for T-Hub.
The initiative of T-Hub would surely pump lifeblood into the Indian entrepreneurial ecosystem and attract entrepreneurs towards Hyderabad. It will demonstrate how a comprehensive ecosystem can be fostered with government's facilitation to assist start-ups not just to do well within the country, but also make waves in the global marketplace and will surely going to leave Bangalore well behind by becoming the next Silicon Valley of India.
