Hyderabad: Election Commission on Wednesday asked all political leaders, including Union and State Ministers, former ministers and legislators to leave Warangal parliamentary constituency on November 19, before 5 pm to pave an easy way for by-election that would commence on November 21 from 7 am to 5 pm.

Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Bhanwar Lal urged all political leaders to refrain from camping and canvassing in the segment. He also asked the electronic media to stop airing election related ads as well as SMSes. Otherwise, the commission would take penal action against them, he said and added that liquor sale in the segment from November 19 at 5 pm till the polling day on November 21 till 5 pm will attract serious action. Bhanwar Lal said 1,778 polling stations were set up for the purpose and voters could use EPICs as well as other 10 types of identity cards to exercise their franchise in the elections.

Of nine complaints received from the TRS, the TDP, the BJP and the Congress, the Election Commission will take necessary action after scrutiny. The Election Commission sought a clarification from Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma on the Chief Minister announcing Christmas as a State festival, announcing fine rice to hostels and Kalyana Lakshmi to BCs. He also asked the State government to refrain from making such statements of new schemes, projects during the model code of conduct till November 24 when counting and result would be announced. They could cast votes taking help from nearby polling stations, he said.

Bhanwar Lal said all arrangements had been made for live video web casting in 626 polling stations and web casting locally in 300 stations. Illegal activities like distribution of money, liquor and gifts to lure the voters will be dealt with seriously and those who found them can call toll-free number 1800 4252 2747 or send message to phone number 8790499899. Elaborate arrangements have been made with 20 Central paramilitary forces at the segments and every polling station will get an armed cop for protection and arrangements are made to enable physically disabled persons to cast their votes.

It may be recalled that the upcoming bypoll to Warangal (SC) Lok Sabha seat in Telangana is being seen as a first major test of popularity of the ruling TRS and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao after last year’s Assembly elections.

The bye-election, scheduled to be held on November 21, would witness a multi-cornered contest with TRS nominee Pasunoori Dayakar, Congress candidate and former Union Minister Sarve Satyanarayana, NDA’s P Devaiah, a US-based medical professional, Nalla Suryaprakash of YSR Congress Party and the Left-sponsored Gali Vinod Kumar in fray.
