Nalgonda: Unidentified persons partially damaged the statue of Jyotirao Phule at Suryapet on Friday night.

Protesting against the desecration of the statue, the Backward Classes Associations across the district held protest demonstrations on the eve of Phule’s 125th death anniversary on Saturday. The Phule statue, which was located at the Potti Sriramulu Centre in Suryapet town, has been desecrated by unidentified persons. The nose and some part of the ear of the statue were damaged in the incident. The leaders of BC Associations, who came to the statue to make arrangements for observing Phule’s death anniversary, noticed it on Saturday morning.

Protesting against the incident, the BC Associations staged a dharna at the clock tower centre in the town.

Terming the incident as heinous, BC Youth Association district president Duduku Lakshminarayana said that the State government should take the incident seriously and direct the district police to immediately identify the persons, who were involved in the incident. The culprits, who ever may be, should be punished sternly, he demanded.

Strongly condemning the action, the CPI (M) district secretary Julakanti Ranga Reddy demanded that stringent action should be taken against those, who were involved in the incident.
