Hyderabad: Asha workers, who had been agitating for over 100 days, demanding hike in their honorarium called off their strike on Wednesday.

Announcing this, P Jayalakshmi, president of the Telangana Voluntary and Health Workers Union (ASHA), at a huge public meeting said the decision to call off the strike was taken to give a chance to the government to examine the demands put forward by the ASHA workers and take a decision.

Leaders of various political parties, who participated in the public meeting, also urged the Asha workers to call off the strike. Justice Chandra Bhushan told the Asha workers that if the government failed to meet their demands, he would take up the issue and fight it out in High Court and Supreme Court. R Ravindra Kumar Naik, Communist Party of India (CPI) floor leader in Assembly, said that he would raise the Asha workers issues in the winter session of the Assembly.

Earlier, CITU State leaders Chukka Ramulu, Sai Babu, Bhupal and P Jayalakshmi met Minister for Health C Laxma Reddy and discussed the issue. The Minister told them that the government would examine the issue only if they called off the strike.

The Minister is learnt to have told them that he wouldl take up the issue with Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. The Asha workers launched indefinite strike on September 2 demanding that the government fix a minimum salary of Rs15,000 a month instead of performance-based incentives. They put forward an eight charter demand.

To support the striking Asha workers financially P Venkat Ramaiah, general secretary, Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) handed over a cheque of Rs 25,000 to P Jayalakshmi. Around 30 political and mass organisations extended their support to the Asha workers.
