Nalgonda: State Women Commission Chairperson Dr Tripurana Venkataratnam exhorted women to achieve self-sufficiency by utilising educational, economical and social opportunities and the laws brought out by the governments for their protection and welfare. She launched a two-day awareness conference on ‘Women Empowerment-Women Acts’ at TTDC District Samakhya Bhavan here on Thursday.

Addressing the participants, Tripurana said that the women organisations, social activists and NGOs should try to create awareness among the women on the Acts which were promulgated for their protection and welfare, as lack of awareness, particularly in rural areas was causing problems to them. The entire world was talking about women empowerment, but the development of women was not taking place as per expectations, she regretted. It is high time to think about the continuing rapes and crime against women in the world.

Referring to the incidents of acid attacks and sexual assaults against women, she underlined the dire need to analyze the roots of crime against women and oppose them strongly. She said that the government should include lessons in school curricula to highlight the message that male and female are equal. The Anganwadi workers and women organisations have the responsibility to stop child marriages in the district, she felt.

Tripurana opined that women can effectively utilise the women protection acts only when they have proper knowledge about them. In-Charge District Collector Dr N Satyanarayana felt that education was crucial factor for the economic and social development of women. Hence, women should focus on education, he added. The State Women Commission Chairperson has released a book titled “Women Protection-Laws” on the occasion.
